A Rare Combination That’s Changing How People Recover and Perform

Most people have never heard of EWOT. That’s not because it’s new or unproven. It’s because very few wellness centers offer it, and even fewer pair it with red light therapy the way we do at The Shift Healing and Wellness.

If you’ve been looking for a way to support your recovery, improve your endurance, or simply feel better in your body, this combination is worth understanding.

What Is EWOT?

EWOT stands for Exercise With Oxygen Therapy. The concept is straightforward: you exercise at a light to moderate intensity while breathing concentrated oxygen, typically at 90 to 95 percent purity compared to the 21 percent found in normal air. Sessions usually run about 15 to 20 minutes.

The science behind it goes back to the research of Dr. Manfred von Ardenne, a German physicist and researcher who spent decades studying how oxygen delivery affects the body at the cellular level. His work showed that when you combine exercise with supplemental oxygen, something happens that neither one produces on its own. Exercise opens the arterioles and gets blood moving, and the enriched oxygen travels deeper into tissue than it normally could, reaching capillaries that may have been starved of adequate oxygen over time.

When capillaries are deprived of oxygen, the cells lining them begin to swell, which creates a cycle that prevents further oxygenation. Light exercise opens the arterioles, and oxygenated blood can then begin reducing that swelling, allowing more oxygen in and creating a positive cycle of reduced inflammation and enhanced circulation.

Over repeated sessions, this may support lasting improvements in how efficiently the body delivers oxygen to its tissues.

Who Can EWOT Help?

EWOT isn’t just for people who are sick or recovering from illness, though it has been particularly useful in those contexts.

It also appeals to athletes and active individuals looking to improve endurance and speed up recovery between training sessions. With more oxygen available, muscles can perform longer before fatiguing, and higher oxygen saturation during and after exercise may help reduce lactic acid buildup and inflammation, both of which slow recovery.

People dealing with chronic fatigue, brain fog, or low energy. Research has shown that breathing supplemental oxygen may improve cognitive measures including memory, reaction time, and attention. The brain is the most oxygen-dependent organ in the body, and many people report noticeable mental clarity improvements within the first few weeks of consistent sessions.

Those supporting their bodies through cancer treatment, Lyme disease, or other chronic conditions that can leave the body depleted and struggling to maintain energy. EWOT is used at The Shift as a complementary support alongside each client’s medical team, not as a standalone treatment.

Anyone who simply wants to feel more energized, resilient, and well.

Why We Pair It With Red Light Therapy

This is where The Shift Healing and Wellness’ approach becomes particularly rare.

EWOT dramatically increases the supply of oxygen to your cells, while red and near-infrared light increase demand for oxygen in your mitochondria by activating cytochrome c oxidase in the electron transport chain. In plain language, EWOT floods the body with oxygen, and red light therapy helps the cells actually use it more efficiently.

EWOT primarily influences oxygen supply, while red light therapy primarily influences oxygen utilization at the mitochondrial level. Used in sequence, they address the same underlying system, cellular energy production, from two complementary directions.

The protocol at The Shift Healing and Wellness follows the approach supported by current research: EWOT first to prime the body with oxygen, followed by red light therapy while those oxygen levels are still elevated. The result is a session that may produce greater benefit than either therapy could deliver on its own.

What to Expect

A session at The Shift Healing and Wellness is gentle. EWOT involves light exercise, not an intense workout, while breathing through a mask connected to an oxygen reservoir. Most people find it comfortable and leave feeling noticeably clearer and more energized.

Red light therapy follows immediately after, delivering specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that penetrate tissue and support mitochondrial function, tissue repair, and reduced inflammation.

At the Shift Healing and Wellness, we work closely with each client to understand where they are in their health journey and how EWOT and red light therapy fit into their overall care. This is part of a collaborative approach, never a replacement for the care you’re already receiving from your medical team.

A 15-Minute Investment in How You Feel

One of the things that surprises people most about EWOT is how short a session is. Fifteen to twenty minutes, a few times a week, is the general protocol. The benefits tend to be cumulative, building over time with consistency rather than showing up all at once after a single visit.

If you’ve been managing chronic pain, recovering from illness, training hard, or simply running on empty, this is a session worth trying.
